Another Year of 100% Distinctions in the Victoria College Speech and Drama Examinations
There is a widespread and unparalleled love for preforming arts at Rydes Hill. This is reflected by our pupils consistent year on year success in the Victoria College Speech and Drama examinations. 2023 didn’t disappoint - 100% of our pupils were awarded a distinction in their examinations, a huge achievement that we are immensely proud of.
Each year, all pupils who choose Speech and Drama as an extra-curricular subject at Rydes Hill take a Victoria College Speech and Drama Examination. There is an initial introductory exam which is taken in Upper Transition (year 2). Here, the children are required to learn and perform two poems and put together a folder of their work (as a project) with illustrations. A short discussion also forms part of their exam which helps to prepare them for interviews later in life. The exams progress year by year up to Form One (year 6) where the pupils are given the opportunity to take their Junior Bronze Medal exam. This exam requires the girls to act, perform poetry and read aloud as well as participate in a more advanced discussion with the examiner. At this stage, their folder of work transitions into the beginnings of a portfolio.
Whilst we enjoy the accolade of achieving a 100% distinction rate, it is important to note that although the exams are challenging, they are not pressurised. Our pupils success is based largely on a culmination of their hard work in lessons where they learn many styles and genres of performance, building a breadth of knowledge to take to their Senior Schools. Not only have our pupils achieved another year of all distinctions in their examinations but another year of Drama Scholarships to Senior Schools. We are extremely proud of every child who leaves Rydes Hill with such confidence and performance abilities.
